2 Programme Overview

The Modular Programme in Science & Technology Studies is suitable for those working, or seeking employment, in a variety of technology-rich industries, such as Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Medical and Precision Devices. It will also appeal to those with an enthusiasm for science and technology for general interest and professional development.  The typical student profile is mature students in full time employment, aiming for career advancement and/or professional development.

 Modular Structure

To allow students maximum flexibility the programme has been developed with a modular structure. This means that a student will have scope to adjust the workload to suit their lifestyle and time commitments by choosing the number of modules they wish to attempt in a given semester. The Diploma cycle consists of 20 modules which may be taken over a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 years. Likewise, the Degree cycle consists of 20 modules which must be completed over 2 to 4 years.

Each module in the programme is worth 5 credits on the E.C.T.S. scale (European Credit Transfer System). The Diploma project modules are worth 10 ECTS and the Degree project module is worth 20 ECTS. Credits in E.C.T.S. format are recognised by universities throughout the E.U.

Diploma in Science and Technology Studies 120 ECTS credits
B.Sc. in Science and Technology Studies 120 ECTS credits

Programme Curriculum

Diploma Cycle Syllabus – 20 modules

Core Modules: There are 16 core modules in the Diploma cycle. These are compulsory unless an exemption has been granted.

Elective Modules: In the Diploma learners elect a specialist stream in either Science or Technology. These streams will provide candidates with an opportunity to focus on an area that interests them or has particular relevance to their career path. There are also a number of electives that are common to both streams. 4 elective modules must be completed for the Diploma unless an exemption has been granted.

Project Modules: The Diploma also includes 2 compulsory projects. These should be company-based where possible, providing learners with an opportunity to apply learning directly to the workplace. Exemptions in project modules are not permissible.
Degree Cycle Syllabus – 19 modules

Core Modules: There are 11 core modules in the Degree cycle. These are compulsory unless an exemption has been granted.

Elective Modules: Learners select 2 elective streams from those shown on the following page. Each elective stream consists of 4 modules, so in total 8 electives are completed.

Project Modules: The Degree also includes a compulsory project. This should be company-based where possible, providing learners with an opportunity to apply learning directly to the workplace.

The module listing for the programme is presented on the following page. Learning objectives for each module are available in the book of modules, this will be available on Blackboard.

Professional Transferable Skills

The programme will also systematically incorporate the development of personal transferable skills such as problem solving, networking and decision-making skills. These skills will be integrated into the learning process, through structured learning objectives and assessment criteria. These skills will enable students to become self-reliant and adaptable, and increase effectiveness at both the personal and enterprise level.
