Citing & Referencing

Vancouver Style of Citing and Referencing

“Vancouver” is a generic name referred to numbered styles, where citations are organised by number (as opposed to author-date).  “Vancouver” is commonly used in medicine and science.

Basic Principals

In-text Citations

Citations to another’s work are indicated in the text by means of a number.  In-text citations are denoted using Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3…) in square [ ] or curved ( ) brackets OR Arabic numerals in superscript1.  Best practice is to check with your lecturer to determine their preference for brackets / superscript. Remember to be consistent throughout your document with which ever format is used.

Reference List

Each numerical citation refers to a sequentially numbered reference at the end of the text which provides full bibliographic details

Note that in the reference list, journal titles are usually abbreviated when using Vancouver.  If you need to check the correct abbreviation of the title of a journal that you are referencing you can do so on the website of the (United States) National Library of Medicine.  Click on the link below and it will take you to the relevant section of that website.
