This report is an output from the 2023 ENLIGHT Summer School on Equity and Sustainability Transitions, organised and hosted by the University of Galway in May – June 2023. A blended approach allowed us to deliver a series of virtual sessions and an intensive week of study in Galway, including a one-day field trip. We extend our thanks to the School of Geography, Archaeology and Irish Studies and the School of Political Science and Sociology for supporting the organisation and delivery of this summer school.

ENLIGHT is a European University alliance of ten comprehensive, research-intensive universities from ten European countries. ENLIGHT aims to transform the way we address global challenges and empower our learners, teachers, and researchers to deal with complex sustainability issues. The summer school was organised through collaboration within the ENLIGHT Equity Core Group.

A multidisciplinary group of postgraduate students from seven ENLIGHT Universities took part in the summer school. Students travelled from the Universities of Ghent, Groningen, Göttingen, Tartu, Galway and Comenius University Bratislava. These PhD and master’s students have authored the chapters which make up this report. We express our deepest appreciation to these students who brought their enthusiasm to the Summer School and whose work is exemplified in this report.

We also wish to extend our sincere thanks to all those who delivered and coordinated lectures, discussions, walking tours, and field trips throughout the week. Your time, effort, and engagement with the themes chosen ensured a truly memorable week of learning and collaboration.
